"The traditional light bulb has not changed for over a hundred years since Edison and Swan - the time of Queen Victoria - and these bulbs waste 95% of electricity as heat. "

"By phasing out the traditional light bulbs, we will all be using less energy so will need less electricity."

Surely the 95% of "lost" heat energy has been contributing to heating your house. With that now gone from the bulb, your heating system will be working harder to compensate for the loss? Discuss.

  • Edison and Swan invented lightbulbs with a carbon element which today has been replaced with Tungsten. Also available today is a wide variety of halogen, fluorescent and LED lighting devices. The first sentence in the debate must be contested on grounds of accuracy.
