Samsung NV10 and Macbook Air : incompatible?

|

I recently bought a Samsung NV10 camera, to replace my ageing Fuji compact that had started doing strange things, like not focussing or not opening the lens cover when powered on.

Samsung Manual excerpt

The Samsung camera is a very nice piece of kit for the money; very versatile, lots of functions and I really like the black aluminium finish.

According to the Samsung manual (pdf) it should work with any Mac with OSX version 10.3 or above.  My macbook air is running 10.5.5, and when the camera is connected, nothing happens.  It appears in the System Profiler as a USB device, but it’s not mounting, nor showing up in the finder

The System Profiler info is showing up as…

USB Device:
  Version:	1.00
  Bus Power (mA):	500
  Speed:	Up to 480 Mb/sec
  Manufacturer:	SAMSUNG
  Product ID:	0x1043
  Serial Number:	0000000104C52004
  Vendor ID:	0x0839

I’ve been in contact with Samsung, who have attempted to help, but seem to have hit a wall, having identified the cable isn’t at fault, and that it IS conneting but not being mounted.  I have tested the camera on a Windows XP laptop and my XP Mediacenter, and it works fine there, so the issue is definitely macbook Air related.

I’ve posted a request for help on the Apple forums after finding someone else with the same problem.  I’ll update this post with anything that comes from either avenue.
