I bought an ex-police Ford Transit a while back, and this documents the progress of it's conversion to a campervan.

It came with a bulkhead splitting the load where the cells used to be from where the officers sat, with extra seats and an Eberspacher diesel powered air-heater.

As I understand it, the legal requirements from the DVLA for converting a van to a campervan are as follows:

  • Side windows.
  • Bed of at least 180cm in length, permanently fitted.
  • Permanent seating area and table (table can be folded down or collapsed to allow for the extension of the sleeping area, but the fixtures must be permanent)
  • Cooking area with at least 2 rings to cook on.  This must also be permanently fitted.
  • Minimum 25litres water capacity. (this can be removable, but has to have a place for it to sit)
  • Permanent storage area, e.g. cupboard
My project is to fit a seating area that folds out to a double bed.
Fit an island table.
A sink/hob combo unit
electric pumped cold water supply to the sink.
I'm not going to bother with hot-water as I'll not be showering or washing in the van, and I can use a kettle for hot water for other purposes.
I have some photos of the progress which I'll upload soon.
